- We know from medical practice and research that an adult admitted to an ICU with a life threatening condition, who survives and is discharged from the hospital has a life expectancy of less than five years. If life saving intervention is performed on a baby in the mother’s womb, the infant will most likely have a 70-80+ year (normal) life expectancy.
- Unlike huge foundations like muscular dystrophy or other relatively rare disorders, investments in advances in treatment of the mother and baby before birth have been relatively meager to date. This is why the Pregnancy Foundation deserves attention and support.
- Premature birth is the leading cause of infant deaths and brain damage including cerebral palsy and affects roughly one in every eight pregnancies in the United States. Until recently very little real progress has been made to affect the rate of premature births.
- Investment in life saving tools for the specialty of Maternal Fetal Medicine (high risk pregnancy specialists) which has developed critical tools such as ultrasound and advanced fetal surgery pays huge dividends.
- The profession of Maternal Fetal Medicine has made significant strides over the past 20 years. As the size of the profession grows, so does the amount of research and practice.
- The Pregnancy Foundation has funded over twenty research scholarships, and continues to fund scholarly research in the field of maternal-fetal medicine. Past successes have led to key treatments now being utilized for treatment and prevention of preterm birth.
- Since 2008, the Foundation has awarded twelve Mini-Sabbatical Grants, allowing MFM practitioners to receive clinical training in managing high-risk pregnancies at world class hospitals across the country
